New Zealand Tourist Visa
A New Zealand Tourist Visa (Visitor Visa) allows foreign nationals to visit New Zealand for tourism, to visit family and friends, or to attend short business activities. Below is an overview of the requirements and process.
Visa Types
- Visitor Visa (General Tourist): This is the most common tourist visa, allowing you to visit for sightseeing, recreation, or visiting family and friends.
- Visitor Visa (Sponsored): If someone in New Zealand is sponsoring your visit, they can provide financial support and accommodation.

Eligibility Requirements
- Valid Passport: Must have a passport valid for at least three months beyond the date you intend to leave New Zealand.
- Sufficient Funds: You need to show you have enough money to cover your stay, generally at least NZD 1,000 per month or NZD 400 per month if accommodation is prepaid.
- Onward Travel: Proof of onward travel, such as a return ticket, to show you plan to leave New Zealand after your stay.
- Health and Character Checks You may need to provide medical certificates and police clearance if staying for more than six months.
Documents Required
- Completed Application Form: This can be done online or via paper application.
- Proof of Funds: Bank statements, credit card limit proof, or financial sponsorship letters.
- Travel Itinerary: Flight tickets, hotel reservations, or travel plans.
- Travel Insurance: Though not mandatory, it's highly recommended to have travel insurance.

Application Process
- Online Submission: You can apply through the Immigration New Zealand website, where you'll create an account and submit the required documents.
- Processing Time: Applications typically take 20-40 days to process, but this can vary.
- Biometrics and Interview: In some cases, you may need to provide biometric information (fingerprints and a photo) or attend an interview.
Visa Duration
- Most tourist visas are granted for up to 9 months. You can typically stay for 3 months at a time within an 18-month period, with some flexibility depending on your specific situation.

Fees
- Application Fee: The visa application fee is around NZD 211, though this may vary depending on your country of residence and whether you apply online or in person.
Exemptions
- Nationals from visa-waiver countries (e.g., the USA, UK, EU countries) do not need a visa for short-term visits (up to 3 months) but must apply for an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) and pay the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL).
